Part One: Aging and Abuse
Course Description
Substance Abuse and Older Persons is a four-part course that examines drug and alcohol abuse among elderly persons. Part One of the course provides learners with basic overview on normal aging processes: physical, emotional, and social – and their impact on daily functioning of elderly persons.
Part One is designed to give professionals working with older persons the basic tools needed to diagnose drug and alcohol abuse among elderly persons who have a history of abuse (early onset), or who abuse substances in later life (mid-life and late onset) in response to stressors experienced in normal aging.
The course prepares professionals and family care givers to understand the differences in choice of substances that are abused by different age cohorts as they age. The course gives an overview of the impact of alcohol and drug abuse on the bodies of elderly persons. The course reviews common risk factors that can help professionals and family care givers diagnose drug and alcohol abuse among elderly persons.
Credit Hours
This course has been approved by The National Association of Social Workers and National Board of Certified Counselors.for 3 Continuing Education Hours. (CEH 3)
