Understanding Mental Retardation
and Developmental Disabilities
Course Description
This course defines the broad category of disabilities known as "developmental disabilities" and focuses on the developmental disability referred to as mental retardation. The course is designed to prepare care givers in providing support, supervision, and training to persons who have been diagnosed with mental retardation. The course defines mental retardation and explains the assumptions that are essential to the definition. The course further discusses etiquette, communication guidelines, and training strategies for use by support staff. The course also briefly discusses dual diagnosis and the differences between mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
