Part Two: The Brain, Adaptation and Addiction
Course Description
Substance Abuse and The Brain is a three-part course that examines the effects of psychoactive substances on the normal operation of the brain. In Part One: The Brain and Psychoactive Substances we reviewed the electrical-chemical process by which the brain and the central nervous system operate under normal conditions and under the influence of psychoactive substances.
Part Two: The Brain, Adaptation, and Addiction reviews the most frequently abused substances and their neurological impact It examines the effect of different psychoactive substance abuses on various regions of the brain and on differences in adaptation. In Part Two, we review the importance in addiction and adaptation of (a) the choice of psychoactive substances, (b) how and the substances are consumed, (c) whether other substances are in the body at the time, (d) the overall health and age of the person consuming the substances.
Credit Hours
This course has been approved by The National Association of Social Workers and National Board of Certified Counselors for 4 Continuing Education Hours. (CEH 4)
