Substance Abuse and The Brain
Part One: The Brain and Psychoactive Substances
Course Description
Substance Abuse and The Brain is a two-part course that examines the effects of psychoactive substances on the normal operation of the brain. In Part One: The Brain and Psychoactive Substances, the course focuses on how the brain and central nervous system function, and how those functions affect human behavior. Part One then discusses how introducing psychoactive substances alters the normal function of the brain and how those changes affect behavior.
In Part One, you will briefly examine the bio-chemical operation of the brain and central nervous system, the neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in specific areas of the brain that are affected when psychoactive substances are introduced. Part One ends with a review of how different classes of psychoactive substances – depressants, stimulants, and analgesics – alter specific neuro-processes of the brain, and can lead to the drug seeking and drug consuming behavior we call “addiction”.
